The Gutenberg Festival has been purchased by the Graphic Arts Show Co. The Gutenberg Festival closed its 27th edition with an estimated attendance of 30,000 participants at a show that occupied almost 100,000 square feet of exhibit space in Long Beach, California.
According to In-Plant Printer (July/August 1999), the acquisition of the show adds a major western event to the GASC's network of regional print exhibitions, which include Midwest Graphics held annually in Minneapolis, GRAPHIX EAST held annually in Philadelphia, and The Charlotte Show held every other year in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In a decision that offered relief for printers throughout the country, the U.S. Circuit of Appeals struck down key elements of two Clean Air Act rules that would have tightened air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter. The court determined that the Environmental Protection Agency failed to provide a sound basis for concluding that the specific standards to be mandated by the proposed rules were necessary to protect the health of the public.
Although the EPA is free to try again to propose a new standard, it is anticipated that the recent defeat in court will make it much more difficult to change the more reasonable standard that exists today.

According to a survey conducted by Business Forms, Labels, & Systems, manufacturers have purchased new equipment or enhancements to existing machinery to diversify their capabilities. Almost 46 percent of forms manufacturers responding to the survey reported adding rotary presses. 30 percent of forms manufacturers responding to the survey reported acquiring finishing equipment.
